UNICEF Representative in Zambia Dr Penelope Campbell has observed that an estimated 15 women die every week from pregnancy and birth-related complications in Zambia. Dr Campbell further says pneumonia kills about 2,000 children under the age of five each day globally. Speaking during the handover ceremony of the Medical Oxygen Plant at Kitwe Teaching Hospital, Thursday, Dr Campbell said according to the Zambia Demographic and Health Survey of 2018, one newborn dies every 30 minutes from preventable causes. “Honourable Minister, we are all aware of the high number of pregnant women and newborns that die in Zambia during pregnancy, in the process of childbirth or closely thereafter.
