Symptomatic solution

The recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, brokered by the United States under President Donald Trump, marks a critical opportunity to address the longstanding Kashmir issue. Both nations reportedly agreed to halt military operations and begin broader talks at a neutral site. However, while the immediate cessation of hostilities is a positive step, the underlying dispute over Kashmir remains unresolved. Pakistan has always insisted on the implementation of UN resolutions that back the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, but these have always been rejected by India.

While the ceasefire is a welcome development, it must be followed by sustained diplomatic efforts to resolve Kashmir’s status. The UN, with its historical mandate, should play an active role in facilitating a just and lasting solution, ensuring that the voices of Kashmiris are central to any settlement. Unless the Kashmir issue is resolved, ceasefires will only delay and fail to prevent future clashes.
