State troopers revive, arrest crash victim who suffered suspected overdose

Griswold — State police administered the opioid reversal drug naloxone, or Narcan, to a Sterling man who they say crashed his vehicle Saturday and was found unresponsive due to a suspected heroin overdose.

Hank Cholewa, 33, of 129 Main St., Apt. D, crashed into a stone embankment about 6:08 p.m. near the intersection of Routes 138 and 201 in Griswold.

State troopers found Cholewa, the sole occupant of a Jeep Cherokee, unresponsive. They administered Narcan and performed first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Cholewa became responsive after several minutes, police said.

Once conscious, police said Cholewa ignored orders to show his hands and continued to reach for the center console. Police removed Cholewa from the vehicle and onto the ground. Troopers later said they found a 3-inch razor blade in the vehicle’s center console.

Cholewa was transported to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich for treatment of minor injuries. He was charged with failure to carry insurance, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive right and interfering with a police officer.

Cholewa was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond.
