Farnborough International Airshow has been evacuated after the site was flooded after torrential rainfall.

The popular event was washed out after a “tropical” plume triggered torrential downpours throughout the UK.

A statement on the event organiser's websie said: "Due to the heavy rain, unfortunately we have had to cancel today’s flying display and close the show early.

"This is of course disappointing news but safety remains our number one priority. We expect to run a full programme of events tomorrow and the rest of the week. All of today's tickets are valid tomorrow.

Earlier Virgin Atlantic announced it would but 12 Airbus A350-1000 planes at a list price value of £0.3 billion.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who met Sir Richard Branson to view a flypast by the Red Arrows at the event in Hampshire, said: "I welcome the news of Virgin Atlantic's investment. As well as being good news for passengers, it's great news for jobs in the UK.

"The fantastic Airbus A350 is part-built in the UK with Rolls-Royce engines and other suppliers across the country.

"It's an investment in the UK itself, and our world-beating aerospace industry."
