L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Commercial Training Solutions (CTS) business will display its L-3 Link UK-built Airbus A350 Flat Panel Trainer (FPT) at the Farnborough International Airshow for the first time this year. The FPT will be operated by instructors and cadets from L-3 CTC Aviation – demonstrating the capability offered by L-3 CTS, including cadet training, qualified pilot training, and simulation and training centers.

Based on the company’s market-leading RealitySeven simulation technology, the FPT is one element of a multifaceted training product solution offered by L-3 Link UK, ranging from RealitySeven high-fidelity total-immersion Full Flight Simulators (FFSs) to Pilot Transition trainers, Flight Management System trainers, and classroom learning using laptops and tablets. The FPT, which is destined for Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong, is part of a suite of A350 FFSs and FPTs provided by L-3 Link UK.

“We are excited to demonstrate the new Airbus A350 FPT at the Farnborough International Airshow this year, as it highlights the broad capabilities of our Commercial Training Solutions business,” said Michael T. Strianese, L-3’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We have long been an innovator in flight simulation technology, which complements the training side of our CTS business and provides us with new opportunities to extend our leadership in the evolving global aviation industry. Our focus now is on delivering more enhanced and innovative technologies that meet the diverse needs of our leading airline customers.”

L-3’s CTS business is composed of Link UK and CTC Aviation within the Precision Engagement & Training sector of L-3 Electronic Systems. Supported by broad expertise in all aspects of pilot training, these businesses offer a comprehensive suite of tailored commercial training solutions across the globe. Services include selection, cadet (ab initio) training, resourcing and airline training (including recurrent, type rating and command training) – all supported by market-leading simulation products such as the RealitySeven FFS.

“We’ve had considerable success leveraging the capabilities within L-3 CTS, combining our industry-leading products from L-3 Link UK and comprehensive training solutions from CTC Aviation,” said Alan Crawford, president of L-3 Commercial Training Solutions. “For example, our contract to supply Virgin Atlantic Airways with a Boeing 787 training device and service now includes a provision for instructional resources and capability from CTC Aviation. Also, we have significantly expanded our training capability at L-3 Link UK’s Crawley facility, where we provide both Airbus and Boeing training. We look forward to showing both current and prospective customers our A350 FPT at Farnborough, including the broad scope of our CTS business and how it can give them a competitive edge in the global marketplace.”
